Types of Essays and Their Structure

What is an essay? An essay is, generally the written writing that outlines the author’s argument, but typically, the definition isn’t clear, and covers all aspects of novels, papers or a brochure, newspaper, or even a short story. Lastly, there is the expository essay. Similar to its closest relative the argumentative essay an expository essay relies on arguments and evidence to justify its various claims. The only thing required in this type of writing is that the author supports each of his or her beliefs with evidence from the empirical or logic. Expository essays, like the name implies, are predominantly with matters of fact and therefore are quite different from the literary essay.

Narrative essays are distinguished by their ability to tell an entire story. While the majority of narrative essays are made up of personal experiences, some expository ones can be written as fiction. The most popular type of narrative essay is called the expository narrative, which takes on the form of an oral narrative. These kinds of essays typically relate to something that actually happened to the writer, instead of something that is fictional.

Narrative essays permit the writer to add more detail to his or her arguments, and allow them to illustrate their points with more images and words. It is important to remember that text and images should only be used to support the thesis assertion. They cannot be used to express the writer’s ideas. A reader might also be able to ask whether the writer has clearly presented their ideas through the use of images and text.

In addition, expository essays may also be divided into two main subtypes that are analytical and expository.
